The Melbourne Portrait Studio’s maternity photography sessions are very special. Bring your partner and let’s celebrate the imminent birth of your new family member and the relationships that will be there for all time.
Soon an unforgettable portrait of you cradling your baby will adorn the walls of your home and be a constant reminder of where it all began.
Your gorgeous baby bump holds an amazing new person. Your baby’s every wriggle, kick and twist makes you wonder, hope and love. Will he have his father’s eyes and sense of humour? Will she have your smile and breezy nature? If he’s shy, you’ll coax bravery. If she’s a ballerina, you’ll be at every performance. These are the days of awe and amazement at the miracle of life and how it grows inside your nurturing womb. It’s impossible to overstate your connection to your baby.
The beginning of an eventful journey
The fascination young children feel when they discover where they come from is the most beautiful innocence. They are instantly enthralled as their little minds fill with wonder at how they could have ever been inside their mummy’s tummy.
A glorious portrait of you cradling your belly and demonstrating your love for them is the beginning of their enlightenment. Your utter devotion and protective spirit will convey unique feelings to them so they always feel they belong.
Your new baby will grow. So keep your memories of every stage of their lives in a beautiful portrait from the Melbourne Portrait Studio.
Your experience at The Melbourne Portrait Studio is all about you, and those you love. Through conversations, we will delve into what is most important to you, learn more about your individual personalities, and find the depth of emotion and admiration that you have for one another. These stories will be captured in meaningful portraits; making your portraits as unique as you are.
The most exciting part of your experience with us – that which all the preparation and energy has led to – is the unveiling of your beautiful portraits. You will not need to wait long! Around 45 minutes after your photoshoot, your portraits will be revealed to you through a cinematic presentation.
During this reveal, you will select your favorite portraits and together we will design stunning wall art to be displayed throughout your home; which will inevitably be treasured and shared for generations to come.
You, and those you love will enjoy them each day, and be reminded of your unique story, and the love you share.
We cannot wait to learn your story, and share this experience with you!

FAQ MATERNITY Photoshoot
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HAVE A MATERNITY SESSION?
It’s best to schedule your maternity session between 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy. By this stage, your baby belly will have that gorgeous round shape, perfect for beautiful looking photos. After the 36th week, most women tend to feel uncomfortable and fatigued during their session so it is a matter of finding the right balance for you. It also allows us a little extra time at the end in case your little one is in a rush to meet you earlier than expected!
What if I feel insecure about my body and how I look during my pregnancy?
This is a very natural and normal feeling that most mums-to-be experience, especially with their first pregnancy. You are growing a little baby inside of your body and with that comes a lot of changes to your own body. I’ve been there and completely understand how you feel.
We’ll have a chat about it and I promise you that it is my number one priority as a professional photographer to make you feel and look your best during our time together. I know many ways to hide unflattering things with the right posing and lighting. We will discuss everything beforehand and I can pose you in specific ways to hide these things in a flattering manner and always remember: we are masters in post-processing 🙂
This is also exactly the reason why having portraits of yourself looking amazing is so important. It really boosts your self-love. I know many ways to hide unflattering things with the right posing and lighting. So please trust me when I say you will look gorgeous in ALL your photographs!
I want to book a shoot, but I am so nervous.
Everyone is nervous and that is totally fine. We are there for you and guiding you every step of the way. You will have a great time and when you see your gorgeous images, it will totally be worth it!
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO POSE, WILL YOU TELL ME WHAT TO DO?
We will absolutely tell you how to pose and where to look. All you have to do is show up and have fun!
DO YOUR CLIENTS DO THEIR OWN HAIR AND MAKEUP?
For our maternity sessions a lot of clients do their own hair and makeup, however, as this most often is a beautiful but tiring time in your life, hiring someone to do your hair and makeup for your shoot is a wonderful way to pamper yourself so that you don’t have to worry about it. We have a fabulous in-house hair and makeup artist so let us know on time if you would like to book her.
Can I suggest ideas and bring props?
Yes of course! This is your unique maternity session and you are more than welcome to send me anything that inspires you. Some clients like to create a Pinterest board with ideas which we can discuss beforehand. You can bring any items that are personal to your family and will help tell your story.
What do I wear for my maternity photoshoot?
During our conversations, we will be planning the look and feel of your session and portraits. Stretchy or lace materials are perfect. Try to wear a loose-fitting dress to keep your skin smooth and remove any tight clothing incl underwear at least three hours prior to your session to avoid marks on your body. This is especially important if you plan to have any nude or semi-nude portraits.
You can bring different outfits to create different styles. We love to hear about any ideas that you may have too.
CAN MY PARTNER AND CHILDREN BE INVOLVED IN THE MATERNITY SESSION AS WELL?
Yes, of course. We are capturing your family, your story, so your loved ones should absolutely be part of your maternity photoshoot. There is plenty of time to also take gorgeous portraits of just you and your beautiful bump.
Do you have any other tips to prepare for the session?
It is important to select a day for your photo shoot where you have nothing else planned. Having to rush between events causes stress which can show in the final images. Have lots of time to prepare and get plenty of rest. Stay hydrated and have a light snack before the session to keep your energy levels up. We will take care of the rest!
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY SESSION?
As soon as we’ve finished your maternity photoshoot, I’ll start preparing the reveal. In the meantime, you can go for a walk, lunch or rest in the studio. About 45 minutes later, you’ll experience a fully guided cinematic presentation of your best portraits and together we will design artwork that brings life to your home.

Our portrait studio is light, inviting, and will make you feel at ease. We have many beautiful collections of artwork on display, to help you imagine how your own collection will come to life in your home.
Recently we moved from a large commercial studio into our current luxurious and cosy home studio in Altona, Melbourne. The move was made for our clients and their fur babies; to capture portraits in a more welcoming and relaxed environment.
Our clients travel to us from all over Australia because of our personalized approach to understanding the unique story and personalities behind the portraits, which leads to stunning gallery style artwork.
There is ample free parking.
Life in Lockdown
When COVID-19 hit Melbourne harder than a runaway tram, our lives changed – literally overnight. Together Apart gives a rare glimpse into life in lockdown, beautifully capturing the isolation, frustration, hope, humour and human need for togetherness that quickly became part of our daily lives.
What started as a conversation over the back fence to break the solitude of lockdown has grown into a friendship and a partnership between me and my next-door neighbour, travel writer and journalist Belinda Jackson.
Photographed, written and printed in Melbourne, Together Apart is our black-and-white coffee table book featuring 60 portraits of people in our neighbourhood.
